- Liquid mixture is pumped from the feed tank into the bottom of the extraction column
- Counterflow operation with solvent pumped into the top of the extraction column
- Carrier liquid and solvent are insoluble, creating an observable phase boundary adjustable via two valves
- Transition component transfers from carrier liquid into solvent within the column
- Trainer operable as continuous or discontinuous process using two three-way valves
- Distillation unit includes heated round-bottom flask, packed column, distillation bridge, and Liebig condenser for enrichment of the transition component
- Enriched extract exits the top of the distillation column and is collected in a tank
- Bottom temperature measured, digitally displayed, and controlled by PID controller
- Top temperature of distillation column also measured
- Distillation separates solvent from transition component, collecting solvent for reuse
- Recommended ternary system: rapeseed oil (carrier liquid), ethanol (transition component), water (solvent)
- Density measurement determines concentrations of extract, top, and bottom products
- Conductivity meter included for alternative ternary material systems
