Although many materials burn well as a loose powder, others such as benzoic acid must be pelletized for safe and complete combustion. A pelletized sample will: a) restrict the burning rate to a safe level, b) immobilize loose powder and prevent a possible blowout from the combustion cup, and c) permit easy handling during weighing and transfer to the bomb.
